Unit One: Ecosystems, Ethics, Market, and Policy (Preview)

Egyptian Bazaar

Egyptian Bazaar are a smorgasbord of goods that delight the senses and empty the pocketbook.

Unit one starts off with an overview of ecosystems, and an exploration of what they are. This is a time to think of the big picture of the environment and how we act within it as humans. It’s a time to think a little deeper of where  things come from, such as your clothes. Where do they come from, how they are made, and what does it takes to get them onto your body?

We all know that things just don’t magically appear in our closets and on our table, though, it would be pretty awesome if it did. Everything comes from somewhere, and someone has worked on it before it lands in our possession. What is the economical cost accrued along the way? What is the ecological one?

Are these fair prices to pay?

Some people don’t think so. This is why they push for new rules to the game — ones that are fair to the planet. To do this they lobby for a change in policy, the way we do business, and a more consciousness to the way we live.  They ask for a sustainable way of living, not just a cheap one.

With that in mind, we are going to look at sustainability and the environment in context of science. It’s a very complicated system with lots of nuances. It takes a lifetime to understand all of it, work with it, and try to come up with policies. Yet, you will find that everyone has an opinion with very little training and without thinking it through. Unit one strives to give you some of the basics of the big picture so you can understand the full impact environment has on public perception, your future in law enforcement, and how you choose to live in your personal life.
